  • The oldest and most basic filtration process, which generally uses two grades of sand (coarse and fine) for turbidity removal or as a first stage roughing filter or pre-filter in more complex processing systems.
  • A filter used in water purification and consisting of layers of sand arranged with coarseness of texture increasing downward

Building a Sand Castle - Half a Stereo Autochrome - c. 1930s
Building a Sand Castle - Half a Stereo Autochrome - c. 1930s
A young boy and a woman sit in the sand. The boy dumps sand from a lithographed tin sand pail to build a corner tower. A whirligig on the top of the mound of sand whirls in the the breeze. The woman wears a blue dress trimmed with white, a black hat, black stockings, and shoes. The black stockings and shoes do not seem like typical beach wear and I wonder if she might be a nursemaid and not the boy's mother. About the Autochrome: The Autochrome Lumiere was introduced in 1907 and was the primary process used to make color photographs until the introduction of color film in the 1930s. A glass plate was coated with a random mosaic of grains of potato starch died red, green, and violet. Lampblack filled the spaces between the grains. A panchromatic silver halide emulsion is added. After exposing in the camera the plate is developed then reversed as a positive. The starch grains act first as filters for the colors striking the plate and then as a viewing filters in the finished image. For example light from a green leaf will pass through the green particle and expose the emulsion under it but would not pass through the red or violet particles. On viewing by transmitted light the green color would show wherever green light hit the plate.

This is Yitty a paceful village in the capital Muscat. in this shot i used my Tamron 10-24mm @ 13mm with ISO speed of 100 and f/22 (for the max DOF) and exposure time set to 3.2 seconds. this exposure time was enough to partly blur the waves since the waves there were quite harsh. i pluged my 77mm CL polarizing filter on my lens. as well as a graduated ND8 filter to partly cover the bright sky and clouds. and ofcourse a release cable to minimize camera shake. + bubble level to alighn the camera correctly to the horizon. (i found out that bubble level is a must have for all photographers unless your DSLR has this functionality built-in like canon 60D). i spent nice time over there and shot many photos.. and ofcourse i went back home with dripping clothes!! LoL :D
