Artesian well wall
Artesian well wall
Contextual research: Imagine a place in the downtown area were you could get completely safe and clean water to drink? Wouldn’t you like that idea, I know that if I were downtown on a hot summer day I don’t think that I would want to walk around and look for a place to get water from. This is the purpose and claim that the Artesian well is making. The well was first built to service the train station. The train station was unfortunately demolished and the only thing that was left was the well. This was when the friends of the artesian first started; they wanted to be able to preserve the well and the well environment. When they first started to inquire about the well and what it would take to keep the well operational they were handed a book and in response said, "Does this mean we can have an open and flowing source of water essentially "wasting" water, if it serves a higher esthetic, educational, historic preservation good or economic purpose?” As long as it served a purpose, had art work to support it, some kind of educational value and an environmental factor then they could have the well. It didn’t take that long before the well encountered its first speed bump the unbalanced budget stopped all new developments. This meant that all the funding for the well was now not available. This didn’t stop the friends of the artesian from pressing forward though they started to research the requirements of what would be needed. While they were in the process of figuring out what they needed a car hit the pipe. Until they could come up with a complete plan they put a valve on the well as a temporary fix. In order for the process to continue they had to first start by getting a permanent site for the well secured; they had to do over 200 hours of water testing, and find a water head. Since there was so much work that they had to do then they decided that they would get the community involved with the project and asked the local high school students to draw up were they thought the location should be, as well as what they thought that it should look like. In 1998 the leaders of congress met with the friends of the artesian in order to set up a plan that would allow them to find a way to secure the artesian well. The problems that they were trying to fix in these meetings there goals were, “to find solutions to meet all regulatory requirements, and to realize the goal of a publicly owned, open and flowing well surrounded by a pocket park and with interpretive signing to teach and celebrate Olympia's artesian heritage.” If they could find a way to meet all these goals then they would be able to have the well open again. At one point in the agreements they thought that they had reached an agreement, diamond parking lots had offered several locations that the city could use. In the end diamond parking ended up withdrawing the contract because the city wouldn’t give them the rights to all the downtown parking in Olympia. This caused another problem that they would face; slowly they were losing hope about the well. Since the diamond parking lots and the city were in debates about what should happen with the well then the city grew more reluctant to support the project because of the fact that they didn’t want to fund the project. They challenged the residents of Olympia to find another city that was funding a well with a park. That idea backfired on the city when one of the residents told them that there was a park in Salt Lake City that was funded by the city. Just when the well idea was losing hope their turned out to be a light at the end of the tunnel the city agreed to take the name of the well as long as the friends of the artesian would help to fund and find a place to put the well. With help from the port they were able to talk to the city about potential locations that they could place the well. With the help of the residents in Olympia they were able to write a story in the Olympian that wrote a summary of what they would have to do: On June 29th the Olympian summarized this meeting saying Friends of Artesian must: "Obtain well site approval from the county, secure a preliminary permit form the state Department of Ecology, and obtain a water rights permit. That means the group must show that the overflow water from the well is put to a beneficial use, such as replenishment of a wetland. Friends must also prepare a maintenance and operation plan for the well. When those steps are accomplished, the state health department will consider approving the project." After several years of waiting on June 20, 2006 the department of health granted them a permit, and shortly following them on June 22, 2006 the department of Ecology granted them permission to do test drilling. On June 31, 2007 the next wall came up, the city of Olympia would not take the ownership of the well and without their consent there was nothing that could be done. It came down to a waiting game to see who would actuall
Day 94 - Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Day 94 - Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Surely the only logical way to start this write up is to begin with the Soundtrack. I might be a tad biased towards the soundtrack having been born in the 80's, as well as finding myself have a great fondness for a wide variety of 80's music (across many genres) as I've grown older. "Vice City" truly delivered an epic soundtrack to those whom are partial to 80's music. Presented in the usual 'radio station' format we've come to get used too since the PS2 era Grand Theft Auto games, and covering a great range of genre's too, meaning there was always something to suit everybody's ears. In fact I'd imagine even if you didn't like the actual songs on the sound track, it still did a lot in terms of adding that 80's vibe to the game, just like any good movie these days that is set in the 80's needs to do the same. Vice City went a long long way in capturing life in the 80's though, far beyond just the music. Everything down to fashion, trends, shops, buildings, signs, the car designs. It was perfectly brought back to life, and put together with a story that had inspiration from some great 80's films, most notably of which... "Scarface". On the gameplay side of things we got an expansion on what we'd come to love from playing Grand Theft Auto 3. Small "I wish there was..." ideas a lot of us would've had from GTA3 came to life, for instance, the ability to truly take to the skies thanks to helicopters (although I'm sure like myself, many of us had fun trying to fly the Dodo in GTAIII), and one of the additions I personally loved most was the inclusion of motorcycles. In fact ever since GTA: Vice City I've always had a fondness for bike related missions in the GTA series [slightly off topic but I loved "The Lost and The Damned" for GTAIV because of it's heavy focus on motorbikes thanks to the biker gang storyline)]. I really feel as though I should be writing a whole lot more about GTA: Vice City because it constantly ate and ate away at my free time. I guess there isn't really much I need to elaborate further on though, it was simply a fine fine sequel, and one of the best 'sandbox' games of it's time. An amazing experience that definitely is worth re-visiting if you haven't played it since the PS2 heyday, trust me, you'll have a blast. 5 star police chases on a Pizza Moped, whilst you listen and sing along to "Aneka - Japanese Boy", good times!
