My First Bike Crash
My First Bike Crash
One hell of a day captaining a tandem for Marie on the 100,000 Metre T-Shirt Ride out of Laingsburg, MI. Started off very strong with little wind and felt great until we crashed on a turn at mile 24. The turn was marked late at the bottom of a hill and there was lots of gravel on the turn. We took it going too fast and I may have braked when I saw the gravel or just to slow for the turn. We slipped in the gravel and went down on the right side. I hadn't even realized that another rider, Diana, had been drafting behind us and crashed as well. Diana and Marie took the brunt of the injuries. Lots of blood on all of us, but nothing broken. I was pretty shook up and frustrated with myself and feeling responsible for the other people involved. When my knees finally stopped shaking I started feeling light headed and nauseous. We sat for a while and it went away; we decided we wanted to continue. A number of people stopped to help including a couple in a car that saw the crash happen and Marie's husband Nino who was passing on another tandem. After a few miles to get my head back in it I started feeling strong for the remainder of the ride, but it was not without more problems. There was a continuous clinking noise coming from the front crank area, and about 15 miles after the crash the chain started skipping on every stroke. It was more irritating than it was debilitating. Oh yeah, and both Marie and I each took turns dropping our water bottles. All in all, we really ran the gambit of things that could go wrong, but it was a big day of firsts for me - first time past 42 miles, first tour, and first crash.
