1. Can text structure be taught?
I also want to weigh in again on having lots of opportunity to read AND WRITE the genre that is the focus at the time and include experienced teaching that encourages inquiry (questioning, wondering and wandering) not specific formulas.
But this needs to also be done in relation to authentic uses of the literary genre of focus. I have many samples of dedications, receipts, letters to principals or editors, etc., that elementary aged students wrote that contain appropriate genre forms because of the function of the piece. When kids have reason to write different genre for authentic purposes and also have opportunity to talk about what they want to accomplish and how it will affect their audience(s) all these uses of language influence the quality of the piece.
Also related to this is the concept of "teaching". If teaching is considered transmission model where knowledge is transmitted from the brain of the teacher to the learner's brain than I support Krashen's responses to this question. However, if teaching is considered transformative for the LEARNER than the teacher discovers what the learner knows and the learners' concerns and questions and supports the learner in discovery. In these teaching - learning relationships, the learner is always in control of what is learned. Yetta
