In 1878, Lord Armstrong installed carbon rod arc lamps in the picture gallery at Cragside. Debdon Lake had been created and a pipeline linked the dam at the end of the lake with a square stone building in which a 6hp turbine was used to drive a dynamo for power generation. The dynamo was a Siemans series wound, bipolar, horizontal dynamo with a drum armature and a single magnetic circuit. The electricity generated by the dynamo was transmitted along a double lone of Birmingham No.1 gauge copper wire supported on telegraph poles for the 1370m (1500 yards) to the house. From this line, a supply was tapped off to a joiner's shop so that during the day the electricity powered a sewing machine.

The Pelton Wheel Power system was installed in 1940 and utilized the creek flow of 500 gpm and available head of 160 ft to provide 6.1 kW of electrical energy to the main house. The wheel was invented by Lester Allan Pelton in the 1870s. The Pelton wheel extracts energy from the impulse (momentum) of moving water, as opposed to its weight like traditional overshot water wheel yielding a more efficient design. Pelton's paddle geometry was designed so that when the rim runs at ? the speed of the water jet, the water leaves the wheel with very little speed, extracting almost all of its energy, and allowing for a very efficient turbine.
