Field Notes No. 12 (Dec 11, 2011)

WATERFOWL VIEWING, SUNDAY AFTERNOON, DECEMBER 11, 2011, 2 pm.

Wolf Oesterreich and I will meet at the north parking lot (near the shelter) with spotting scopes. Bring your binoculars.

Today, the north lake was partly frozen over and most of the geese were congregated there. Ducks were using the south lake which had very little ice. This may change, so check your email at noon on Sunday, to confirm the meeting place.

The first week of December has been great for viewing waterfowl at Hayden Park. Large numbers of Canada Geese and a smaller number of Cackling Geese have been consistently seen. New species are seen daily but don't stay long. The Long-tailed Duck that was seen earlier in the week was not there the next day. Buffleheads and Common Goldeneyes, Gadwalls, Ring-necked Ducks and Snow Geese have been seen.

So come on out, the weather forecast is good.

UPDATE -- December 11, 11 am

The waterfowl have moved to the south lake. If you plan to attend the outing today, meet at Calhoun Park (next to Conley's Trucking off of Dawes Drive) at 2 pm.
