Suburban District

General Description

The Suburban District lies
immediately south of Insulae III, IV and Orientalis I. It is accessed via the Marina Gate at the southern end of Cardo V and by a narrow ramp at the southern end of Cardo IV.

The Suburban DIstrict is the ancient waterfront area. Its central feature is the Terrace of M. Nonius Balbus which lies directly over the boathouses that once lined Herculaneum's ancient shore.  To the east of the terrace lie the Suburban Thermae
while to the west of is the so called Sacred Area which incorporates two sacelli at its western end.
