Herculaneum‎ > ‎

Insula oII

General Description

Insula Orientalis II lies north of Insula Orientalis I and east of Cardo V. The whole block is occupied by a single building of opus reticulatum which runs for approximately 55 metres along Cardo V.

A number of stores, built against the monumental ediface, supplied the needs of the public who frequented the Palaestra at the rear. These stores include a pistrinum. At the northern limit of the insula is the Aula Superiore
(upper hall) of the palaestra complex which opens off the eastern limit of the Decumanus Maximus.
