    activated charcoal
  • an over-the-counter product that may help relieve intestinal gas.
  • activated carbon: powdered or granular carbon used for purifying by adsorption; given orally (as a slurry) it is an antidote for some kinds of poisons
  • Activated carbon, also called activated charcoal or activated coal is a form of carbon that has been processed to make it extremely porous and thus to have a very large surface area available for adsorption or chemical reactions.
  • A device for suppressing electrical or sound waves of frequencies not required
  • (filter) remove by passing through a filter; "filter out the impurities"
  • A porous device for removing impurities or solid particles from a liquid or gas passed through it
  • A screen, plate, or layer of a substance that absorbs light or other radiation or selectively absorbs some of its components
  • (filter) device that removes something from whatever passes through it
  • (filter) an electrical device that alters the frequency spectrum of signals passing through it
  • The free or unconfined space above the surface of the earth
  • a mixture of gases (especially oxygen) required for breathing; the stuff that the wind consists of; "air pollution"; "a smell of chemicals in the air"; "open a window and let in some air"; "I need some fresh air"
  • This substance regarded as necessary for breathing
  • air out: expose to fresh air; "aerate your old sneakers"
  • The invisible gaseous substance surrounding the earth, a mixture mainly of oxygen and nitrogen

Charcoal based Activated carbon filters are utilized in BioGS Air Purifiers to capture airborne gases, VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and odors. VOCs are often generated by offgassing from carpets, composite wood furniture and other materials in the home. The effectiveness and the life of the carbon filter are determined by the concentration and density of active carbon in the deodorization filter. Since the BioGS Activated carbon filters have a much higher active carbon concentration and density than ordinary activated carbon filters in the market, odor problems from cooking, pets, smokers, microbial VOC or other sources can be eliminated or minimized very effectively.

Our new place in Middletown is smaller and we won’t have room for this huge tank. Some of the fish were pretty small when I got them, but have grown.

The tank is fresh water. The fish are healthy. They haven’t had any disease or problems in over two years. As it is, the tank is almost self sustaining. Besides the daily feedings, I clean the filter and top off the water maybe every six weeks or so.

The dimensions of the tank and stand are 16”x50”x50”.
The stand is 16” deep, but with spacing, it stands 18” from the wall. The stand is 50” wide, the tank is just a bit shorter.
The stand is maybe 30” high and the tank is probably about 20” high.

Counting the filters in my radioactivity monitor
Counting the filters in my radioactivity monitor
Trying to detect the radioactivity released from the damaged fukushima nuclear plant. As of 3/20, I'm not detecting anything that can't be attributed to naturally occuring radon. I pushed air through two layers of filter material, 1st layer is furnace filter, 2nd layer is activated carbon coated fiber mat. The filter unit was run for 48 hrs, then I brought it indoors to count the filters. Measurements were with a pancake G.M. tube, counts were for 15min. each, totaled on a scaler. on 3/20 : background =661counts, furnace filter material=1278 counts, charcoal filter=752 counts. seems like most of the radioactivity (so far probably just radon daughters) is being trapped on the first filter, and little is passing through to the carbon layer.

Charcoal Powder, Activated - 4 Oz,(Starwest Botanicals)
Charcoal is carbon. Activated charcoal is charcoal that has been treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. The use of special manufacturing techniques results in highly porous charcoals that have surface areas of 300-2,000 square metres per gram. These so-called active, or activated, charcoals are widely used to absorb odorous or coloured substances from gases or liquids. When a material absorbs something, it attaches to it by chemical attraction. The huge surface area of activated charcoal gives it countless bonding sites. When certain chemicals pass next to the carbon surface, they attach to the surface and are trapped. Activated charcoal is good at trapping other carbon-based impurities ('organic' chemicals), as well as things like chlorine. Many other chemicals are not attracted to carbon at all - sodium, nitrates, etc. so they pass right through. This means that an activated charcoal filter will remove certain impurities while ignoring others. It also means that, once all of the bonding sites are filled, an activated charcoal filter stops working. At that point you must replace the charcoal.
