The Introduction to the Course states:
This is a course in miracles. You must learn the lessons in it but you choose when you want to learn them. Free will does not mean that you choose what it is you need to learn but that you choose what you want to learn at any given time. This course does not teach the meaning of God’s Love because that is beyond what can be taught. But it does teach you how to remove your obstacles to God’s Love, Which is your natural State of Being. Fear appears to be the opposite of God’s Love but God’s Love is all that there is and It has no opposite.

Some of the Principles on which the Course is based:

The fundamental principle of A Course in Miracles is the Atonement principle.

The Atonement principle states that the separation from Spirit did not ever happen.

We have always been connected to Spirit.

This is a course in cause (mind) not effect (body/world)

Separate ego interest versus shared interests (shared interests = giving and receiving are the same = teaching and learning are the same)

Asking the Universal Spirit for help means looking without condemnation, accusation or judgment at one's resistance to the Atonement principle that the separation from Spirit never happened.

The fundamental process of the ego is to endlessly seek and never find.

The Ego cannot experience oneness with the Spirit.

The principal purpose of A Course in Miracles is to restore to one's awareness the power of one's mind to choose.

All minds are joined; bodies are not

Projection makes perception, a fundamental law of the mind, is a corollary in this world to the metaphysical principle that  "ideas leave not their source".

The theology of A Course in Miracles is non-dualistic; that is, there is no subject-object dichotomy in the Godhead.

Although the Course uses christian terminology, it is a universal metaphysical course and can be interpreted to apply to all spiritual paths.

What is A Course in Miracles? (also referred to as ACIM or the Course)

It is a self-study spiritual curriculum that sets forth  absolute non-dualistic metaphysical  principles and  integrates forgiveness, emphasizing its practical application in daily living.

Many who do not identify as christian are initially "turned off" by the use of christian terminology in the Course.  But like many of us, by changing the definitions of the word "Father" to Buddha nature, Allah, Yaweh, or the God of our Understanding; The word Jesus to to the Buddha, Christ Consciousness, etc, and the word Holy Spirit to Spirit, Inner Teacher, or Spirit Guide, we have been able to move past the words to the universal metaphysical concepts taught in the Course.

The teachings of A Course in Miracles is discussed by Oprah Winfrey in her interviews with author Marianne Williamson, and are supported by some progressive religious denominations and  "New Thought" churches, such as the Association of Unity Churches

Some statements from the Course workbook:

(The Introduction)  This is a course in miracles. It is a required course.

Only the time you take it is voluntary.

Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum.

It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time.

The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love's presence, which is your natural inheritance

The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.

This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way:

Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God.

Perception is a function of the body, and therefore represents a limit on awareness.

Perception sees through the body's eyes and hears through the body's ears.

It evokes the limited responses which the body makes.

The body appears to be largely self-motivated and independent, yet it actually responds only to the intentions of the mind.

If the mind wants to use it for attack in any form, it becomes prey to sickness, age, and decay.

If the mind accepts the (Holy) Spirit's purpose for it instead, it becomes a useful way of communicating with others, invulnerable as long as it is needed, and to be gently laid by when its use is over.

Of itself it is neutral, as is everything in the world of perception.

Whether it is used for the goals of the ego or the (Holy) Spirit depends entirely on what the mind wants.
