Boxley Pumping Station
Boxley Pumping Station
This pumping station was built in 1937 to supply water to Maidstone in Kent, UK. It takes water from the North Downs chalk aquifer from a well 70m below the surface and from a greensand borehole drilled right through the chalk well to 105m below ground level. Another borehole offsite also pumps water to the site for treatment. Total hydraulic capacity is 7,300,000 litres per day. Sounds a lot but Maidstone consumes much more so it is only one of 3 stations dedicated to the area - and this is the smallest!
Old Orchard Pump House
Old Orchard Pump House
As a kid I thought the pump house at the Old Orchard Pumping Station in Cherry Hill was a converted residence. It was actually was built to be disguised as a house - common in the 1960's when utilities began to make an effort to blend in.
