Lucy Emlyn-Jones

I am a qualified counsellor who has been working in the alcohol and drug field for 25 years. I also have over 10 years' experience within a generic employee counselling service. I have been highly fortunate to have a career in which I have been able to work with a very wide range of people who have accessed counselling to address the issues that affect them. Such issues include alcohol and drug concerns, anxiety and depression, bereavement, low self-esteem, childhood abuse and post-traumatic stress.

My work is rooted in a humanistic, person-centred philosophy and integrates a range of approaches such as solution-focussed, existential and cognitive behavioural therapy. This allows me to respond flexibly to my client’s particular situation and needs. My counselling approach is greatly informed by the values and skills of Motivational Interviewing (MI), a strengths-based, respectful approach aimed at helping people make positive changes in their lives. I have been a trainer in MI for over 20 years.

I believe that people are the experts in their own lives, that each person is unique and will have their own solutions to the problems they face. I believe that human beings are strong and resourceful and that this is never more apparent than at times of struggle.

My focus is on building a trusting, respectful relationship with my clients and through empathic listening and useful questions provide them with thinking space. Space for them to explore their situation and gain deeper understanding whilst at the same time the opportunity to stand back and see a way forward. I will be led by my client about what is important to them. I will be reliable, consistent and will go at their pace.

Being able to talk to a skilled listener who is not involved in our lives, who does not judge or have an agenda, can be very liberating and can free us up to express our thoughts and feelings, discover things about ourselves and what solutions will work for us. I feel privileged to be able to offer people support at a time of stress or need and help someone to challenge and change the things in their lives that hold them back and to realise their hopes and aspirations.
