David Jenkins

David currently offers limited evening availability.

I have provided individual and group therapy within a residential substance misuse service for over 8 years. This rewarding work has enabled me to develop extensive knowledge around alcohol and drug misuse and its many underlying and related issues such as trauma, loss, anxiety, depression, self esteem, and family difficulties. As a qualified counsellor I have also worked as part of Cardiff University’s student counselling team and Cardiff Alcohol and Drug Team.

My experience has shown me that no matter who we are, we all need someone to listen and to support us at difficult times in our lives. I believe that counselling gives space in this often very stressful and demanding world, to reflect on what is going on for us, to explore what it is we want and to find ways forward. I have always felt honoured to work with my clients at these times in their lives and I believe that talking to someone who is not involved in the current problem allows us the freedom to talk openly about what is going on and about how we really feel.

The counselling model I have trained in is an Integrative Model. This draws in elements from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), person centred and psychodynamic theories. With my work with substance use, I draw more on the use of Motivational Interviewing. This means I can work flexibly in a way that can meet your needs, drawing upon my wealth of training and experience.

My promise to you is that I will listen to you and treat you with respect and warmth.  I will provide a safe, supportive environment which will enable us to explore the problems you are experiencing and look to find manageable ways forward.

Each person’s needs are very different, so I’m happy to meet to discuss whether I am the right counsellor for you, and if so, agree on what kind of work we could do together.
