Cheryl Scammells

I have worked professionally for many years as a counsellor, supervisor and trainer. I was employed in the alcohol and drug field for nearly 30 years and for 20 years in the provision of an employee counselling service. Throughout these years, I have had the privilege of working with very many people on a wide variety of issues that were causing them stress, distress, anguish, anger, confusion or anxiety. I have learned many things in all that time that I am able to bring to my current practice.

I am an Integrative Practitioner, based on my belief that there is no one approach that can be helpful in all situations. Each human being is unique and different and counselling approaches need to be tailored to their individual needs and circumstances, based on good evidence about what is helpful (and what isn’t!) There are many ways in which human psychology can be understood and explored and that is what I hope to do in my work – listen, understand, explore and collaborate, in order to find a way forward through troubles and difficulties.

I therefore integrate and combine parts of several therapeutic approaches, with a strong foundation of Motivational Interviewing. Motivational Interviewing itself is an integrative approach – a humanistic, evidence-based therapy that helps people understand, challenge and change problematic behaviours. Elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can be very helpful in identifying, understanding and modifying entrenched patterns of unhelpful thinking, whilst Existential Therapy focuses on exploring the challenges and paradoxes of human existence and the search for meaning and purpose. Whatever approach a counsellor takes, research has shown again and again that it is the quality of the relationship that exists between the counsellor and the client that really makes a difference in how well the therapy works. I’m helped by a genuine interest in people in all their infinite variety and a warmth that helps people to feel welcomed and safe.  My work is also greatly enhanced by skilful supervision and by working within a supportive team here at Canton House.
