My "best guess" about the location of this photograph is a small road, ???, Dianchi lu, looking eastward. This is north of ????, Beijing donglu, and extends between ????, Sichuan zhonglu, and ?????, Zhongshan dong yilu ("The Bund"). I believe that the buildings in the background are now the ???????, Manhadun Shangwu Jiudian, Manhattan Bund Business Hotel. 1983 October 12.
