Marrakesh night market
Marrakesh night market
This was taken from my last night in Marrakesh since I was leaving for the Sahara while Connor was staying back. He went to eat, and I went to the market to explore (just a hop skip away from Hotel Ali). Half of the square was filled with people selling wares, opportunities to take pictures with monkeys or snakes (watch out if you don't like random animals placed on your body) and henna; while the other half is selling food and orange juice! Yeah, I didn't expect the orange juice either! On our train ride over here, one of the passengers explained the significance of orange juice in Marrakesh. The story goes ... there once lived a king who was so rich that he wanted everyone to know just how well off he was. He decided to have his servants squeeze orange juice for him, and being in the desert you can see why orange juice would be considered a luxury. But soon having a cup of OJ wasn't enough for the king. He wanted a pool filled with orange juice so that he could go swimming in it every day... a little decadent? I think so, especially considering how much it probably stung his eyes every time he went swimming in it. So every morning he would have his servants squeeze him some fresh orange juice to fill his pool. Eventually, this king passed away and the people were left with all these orange trees and nothing to really use them for. The solution? Orange juice for everyone! So this is one of the many stalls of orange juice you can find here, a def must try if just for the experience. Plus, you can easily strike up a conversation with the venders and get some fun stories out of it too =) This was also where I bumped into two Californians! Thank goodness for them because I am so geographically challenged that even though my hotel was literally a few steps away from the square that I got lost!! But they stuck around to make sure I found my hotel and got back safely. Oh, and I'd also like to add that the person who shared that story with me, LOVED Hannah Montana. She was seriously everywhere we went in Spain and Morocco! Day 67/365

If you are looking for a special first time Marrakech experience you must stay at Dar Najat. Oliver and the team are incredibly friendly and hospitable, nothing is too much trouble. The riad is extremely relaxed and fresh orange juice and mint tea is available at all times on the terrace. The recommendations Oliver made to us were always insightful and incredibly suitable for us and we are quite specific. The Riad is extremely central and close to the main square. Once you have been shown the route by one of the amazing staff you will feel comfortable at all hours of the day. We have been all around the world and stayed in many places, but Dar Narjat is certainly one of the friendliest. If we return to Marrakech there is no doubt we will be booking a room at Dar Narjat again, the kindness of the staff made our trip! Thank you Oliver and team!
