I arrived at this accident scene Friday, near the corner of Grant and Monroe on Madison's near west side, a few minutes after the police and the fire rescue team. A passer-by said it was a collision between a bike and a car, but I couldn't tell. The victim did not seem to be seriously injured, but again, I don't know. I wasn't there as a reporter or photojournalist, and I did not crowd in closer or ask any questions. I just took a few photos and moved on. Looking at them later, I wasn't going to upload anything. I wasn't sure there was anything to justify the intrusion -- and, frankly, I'm still not sure. I don't like to think of myself as a gawker, and there are lots of things I either don't photograph, or if I do, don't share. And besides, ambulance chasing went out as a still photographic genre a long time ago for the most part. TV has more than taken up the slack. Then I took another look. I saw more in the photograph than I had at first. I liked the way the image unfolded slowly through the contrast of light and dark, between the small seated figure and the men looming around her. Most of all, I thought it said something about being dazed, vulnerable and probably hurt, surrounded by a confusing crowd of helpers, some talking to you, some talking to each other, others rushing onto the scene. But I'm still not sure. I may still take it down again. Let me know what you think. Is this an unjustifiable intrusion, or do you think this has some legitimate value as a photograph?

Another view of the accident, a London Transport inspector is on the way to direct bus movements. In the background you can see a bus stop. This was first put in as a compulsory Tram Stop following a tram accident here in around 1922 where a car descended the hill too fast and derailed turning over.
