Canessa and Alioto Buildings, An Historic SF Corner
Canessa and Alioto Buildings, An Historic SF Corner
Most tourists to San Francisco pass by these two buildings, on the corner where Montgomery, Columbus Ave. and Washington St. converge, not knowing the history that was and continues to be made here. The Canessa Building, built in the late 1800's, is an official San Francisco landmark. Following the 1906 earthquake, most of the buildings on the 700 block of Montgomery had been severely damaged. The second story of Canessa was completely destroyed but soon rebuilt. In 1907, the building was purchased by Attillio Canessa, an Italian who had emigrated to this country in 1889. He established his printing business here with a partner, G. W. Miller. Actually, the building did not gain its fame from Canessa's printing business. Years later, in 1933, a gay bar and dance hall known as The Black Cat Cafe was opened here at 710 Montgomery (to the left of the large doorway under the tree). The "Black Cat" was a revolutionary seed in the lumpy cultural soils of San Francisco. At a time when the nearby Castro District was a blue-collar, family-oriented neighborhood, the legal right to operate a "gay business" was won for the first time right here at 710 Montgomery. The straight owner fought all the way to the California Supreme Court (1951) to keep his liquor license. This is where the drag queen Imperial Court, still active today, was birthed. This is the Bohemian Bar in Kerouac's book "On the Road". This is the place where writers and artists, bohemians and beatniks gathered, partied and schemed for over thirty years. The Black Cat flourished until 1963 when its liquor license was finally revoked by the State of California and the SF police closed it down. The building on the corner houses the law offices of Joseph L. and Angela Alioto. Joseph Lawrence Alioto (1916-1998) was the mayor of San Francisco from 1968 to 1976. After he left office, Alioto went back into private practice in this building with his daughter, Angela. Today Angela, who once served 8 years as a member of San Francisco's Board of Supervisors, continues to retain her fathers name on the building and runs one of the City's most highly regarded civil rights law firms from this location.
M.S. Keenora
M.S. Keenora
The M.S. Keenora, a passenger/freighter ship was the most famous and best loved of all Lake Winnipeg ships. Built by the Port Arthur Ship Building Co. in 1897-98, it was constructed with metal frames, deck beams and plating. Completed sections were shipped to The Rainy River Navigation Co. of Rat Portage on Lake of the Woods where it was assembled. CN Rail put her out of business. The Keenora was purchased by a team of Winnipeg lawyers who cut it up and transported it in sections by railroad (ironic) to Winnipeg. She was rebuilt in 1918. A nine-metre section was added, as was a hardwood dance floor, transforming the ship into a graceful excursion boat, complete with orchestra and romantic Red River moonlight dances. By the 1930's, back on Lake Winnipeg, the M.S. Keenora was a popular attraction with tourists, travelling from Selkirk down the Red River to Lake Winnipeg and as far north as Warren Landing. Her career ended in 1966. In 1972 the residents of Selkirk pooled their resources and purchased the Keenora for $10,000 and has since become the cornerstone of the Marine Museum of Manitoba, in Selkirk.
