Retro Vinyl Asbestos Resilient Sheet Floor Covering Sample (Coaster?)
Retro Vinyl Asbestos Resilient Sheet Floor Covering Sample (Coaster?)
A vintage, labeled vinyl asbestos sheet flooring sample. The sample's reverse-side is imprinted with manufacturer's information indicating made by Armstrong, pattern style "Seranada", made with vinyl "Corlon", and a "Hydrocord" backing. A U.S. patent number is also printed on the sample: #3,056,224. The soft "Hydrocord" backing layer contains asbestos and is similar to a felt material, susceptible to damage and friability. The asbestos-containing backing layer appears light grey in color and is paper-like in texture. Strangely enough, this 3.5"-diameter round vinyl asbestos sheet-floor sample was curiously trimmed from its original square shape and was offered as part of a set of stylish retro beverage coasters by a creative antique dealer. The drink coaster set even included a repurposed plastic lid as a convenient holder for the trendy-looking, one-of-a-kind asbestos discs. It sometimes seems there is an endless array of different types, colors, textures and variations of asbestos materials out there.
