Tea stain on the table top. Water bottles along the window sill. Bread crumbs at the base of the lamp. A gold foiled chocolate wrapper in the corner of the room. You told me that the snow's melting in Beijing and I imagined what that would feel like. It must be warm. It doesn't snow in my part of California. But it always makes me depressed when the snow starts to disappear whenever I drive up through the Sierras. It soaks up the dirt from the street and roads and becomes muddy. Raining today. Sometimes, the sun comes out for a few minutes at a time. It's as indecisive as I am about how I feel about you. The backyard's a mess ever since you left and it's almost February now. You were here last Thanksgiving. I remember walking down our block with you that night. I miss you. The last time we talked, we talked about "Norwegian Wood". I still have your copy here, the English version. It's still on top your dresser. I shouldn't have, but I went into your room and found it there. I don't know why I went in. Everything's the way you left it. Your bookmark is still on page 130. The first words on the page are "...long day. The room continued to glow white in the moonlight. Aside from the occasional slight creak of a bed, hardly a sound came from the bedroom...,". I'm glad you still have a room in this house that belongs to you. "I was reading it again and I had a thought about those sex scenes you mentioned," you said on the phone, "I know why Toru slept with her." We talked about how the people in Murakami's world connect with each other sex. Or try to. Sex reveals the substance underneath their relationships and the ones who are in their memories. While we were talking, I thought about us. I've never been in your bed but I feel like you know me more than anyone. More than myself. And I have wanted you. More than you know. It's been raining for a week already. Last night, the storm drain above the front porch overflowed. The water came down over the wood panels and green sofa you left there. I'm worried that mold will grow soon and I will have to throw it away. I took the cushions off and hung them in the laundry room. Ray and I worked this morning to clean it up. He brought over the ladder and I pulled out the muck and rotting leaves that was stuck there for so many months. I had never been on the roof of this house before and seeing the street, the shingles, the fence and into the bedrooms from this vantage made me feel that everything was brand new again. I still remember when you had your fever when you first moved in. You didn't have a bed yet so I let you use mine while I slept on the floor. Your temperature was over a hundred and you kept waking up to put your forehead on the cool window. And wherever you did, you left small clear ovals among the condensation. Today's the same kind of day.
you live your life by the rules of the washing machine.
you live your life by the rules of the washing machine.
We spend our independent lives in the laundry room, time allotted by the wash and dry cycle. You want clean clothes but you hardly have time to do anything before it’s done, unload, reload, press the button, start again. Half an hour at most and that’s not even enough time to take a shower when you really want to, not to get clean but to sit and let the hot water swirl down the drain and away while you think about how you don’t want to get up and fold your clothes and start again, because it’s a never-ending cycle. You live your life by the rules of the washing machine, whites go in warm water and colors in cold so they don’t bleed, hot water to let your memories seep away and fall asleep on the cold tiles of the bathroom floor, a puddle of water spreading like a halo from your wet head. Not really asleep but think about it: do you want to get up? Let the air of the day seep from your lungs and join the steam that hovers around the ceiling, blocking out the light, hear the washing machine signal its end, you have a choice. To get up off the floor and redo the monotonous cycle, or stay there uncomfortable on the floor but content with your nothingness. Why don’t you just wear your clothes dirty, because you’re too afraid to make a bad impression on the people who you say don’t matter, who you really hate but put on a fake smile to make them like you, satisfy your childlike need for being accepted and loved. And now you’re writing just to feel like you’re okay, breathing just to satisfy your mind because it wants to keep you alive but you couldn’t care less, thinking because you have to but you’d rather just not think and become a black hole in a world that no one cares about, littered with cigarettes and broken bottles in every corner, denial in every guilty man’s eyes, the innocent man betrayed and blamed. And now you’re thinking philosophically, something you haven’t done since you were a teenager full of angst and self-pity, but that’s long since been replaced with self-loathing and you can’t stand it any longer so stand up and take the laundry out and empty a cup of detergent into it, walk to your room to start again, resuming your life as if nothing has happened though we all know you've changed.
