Het Steen is an historic medieval castle in the old city center of Antwerp, Belgium, one of Europe's biggest ports. Built in 1200 - 1225, Het Steen is Antwerp's oldest building. Previously known as Antwerp Castle, Het Steen gained its current name in around 1520, after significant rebuilding under Charles V. The rebuilding led to it being known first as "'s Heeren Steen" (the King's Stone), and later simply as "Het Steen" (The Stone). The Dutch word "Steen" means "stone", and is used for "castle" or "fortress". The castle made it possible to control the access to the Scheldt, the river that flows through Antwerp. It was also used as a prison between 1303 and 1827. Part of the castle was later demolished to make the roads to connect the south and the north part of the port. The remaining building contains a shipping museum, with outside on displayed on the quay, some real old canal barges. At the entrance to Het Steen is a bas-relief of Semini, above the archway, circa 2nd century. Semini is the Scandinavian God for youth and fertility (with symbolic phallus). A historical plaque near Het Steen explains that women of the town appealed to Semini when they desired children; the god was reviled by later religious clergy. Inhabitants of Antwerp previously referred to themselves as "children of Semini". and another story: At the entrance bridge to the castle is a statue of a giant and two humans. It is the depiction of the giant Druon Antigoon and the Roman soldier Silvius Brabo. As the legend goes Druon would charge all who passed a toll to cross the nearby river Scheldt. Those who could not pay had their hands cut off and tossed into the river by the giant. Silvius challeneged the giant and cut off Druon's hands and tossed them into the river thus freeing the populace from the giant's terrible toll. To this day the Antwerp city coat of arms contains two severed hands and the Flemish name Antwerpen means "to throw a hand."

Safari Can't Open, Blah, Blah, Blah
Why is it that my iPhone... 1. Won't connect with a web site right now while I'm in the Ferry Building in downtown San Francisco returning back to me a "Safari can't open the page because it can't fine the server" message instead? The same "server not found" message that I get for any web page that I try to access. (Note, I just turned it on and off and got my slooowww internet access back). 2. Can't load a TechCrunch article from the West Oakland BART Station to the Transbay Tube so that I can have something interesting to read while the BART train is under the Bay? 3. Couldn't get a voice or data signal in Downtown Portland for over three hours (until I finally simply turned it off and back on)? 4. Couldn't post an item to Pownce or Zooomr's Zipline last night while driving from Mason and Post to Epic Restaurant along the Embarcadero (over a ten minute drive)? 5. Frequently won't rotate my screen while it's stuck on some internet load? 6. Types really, really, slowly sometimes while I'm loading an internet page? 7. Can't get a signal in the men's restroom in the Ferry Building in downtown San Francisco? 8. Couldn't load a web page from the toll plaza at the entrance of the Bay Bridge to exiting the first off ramp of the Bay Bridge (about 10 minutes later) in San Francisco? 9. Couldn't load a Flickr page while walking from Fort Mason to a parking lot in Chrisy Field in San Francisco? 10. Has never been able to load my Google Map page of everywhere that I want to shoot in the world over the Edge Network when I've tried to access this page on the iPhone at least 50 times? Isn't this new fangled cell phone supposed to be able to get the internet on it?
