Star trails over the Spirit Tree
Star trails over the Spirit Tree
Shot with my Canon EOS 20D and Canon EF-S 17-85mm lens, this was a 53 minute exposure taken on September 16, 2006. The exposure was started at 11:21 PM. Focal length 17mm, aperture f4.0, ISO 200. I also had the long-exposure noise reduction turned on (under the Custom Functions menu). If you ever try a shot like this, you need to make sure that you have your focus and composition just how you want it, because you will only have time for one shot (unless you want to sit out there for 3 or 4 hours....or you have a second camera) as with the long exposure noise correction turned on, it took the camera just as long to write the image to the card as it did to record the image. I brought a spotlight with me so I could lock the focus on the tree, and also used that to help align the tree within the frame. Then I started the exposure, and sat down with a book that I had brought along and did some reading by the light of my LED headlamp. I just guessed at the exposure length.....I was figuring on somewhere between 45 minutes and one hour to get the star trail length that I wanted. After 53 minutes went by, I pressed the button on the shutter release cable to close the shutter, then packed up and went home. Its about a 20 minute trip home from the tree, and after getting home the camera was still writing the image to the card for about another 40 minutes after I got home. I didn't know until then whether or not the shot had worked. I was lucky and it turned out pretty good. Oh yeah....make sure your battery is fully charged, too :-) Long exposures are battery-killers.....maybe even more so than cold weather.
2 cables are all you need and of course your wireless trigger thing. 1) A Canon shutter release cable (similar to RS80N3), which I got it for about US$15 a few years back. Now it's about US$20 from gadgetinfinity. Note that it comes with a 2.5mm socket built-in. If you're a handy man, get a cable without the socket and it cost about less than US$10. Then add the socket yourself. 2) A 2.5mm stereo/mono plug to a 3.5mm stereo/mono plug cable. Note that I found the stereo cable that came with the Cactus wireless trigger i got sometime back. It is already dead. So, I go with PW2. If not, you could create your 2.5mm-mono to 3.5mm mono cable yourself. I bought them just incase for RM1.20 (US$0.33) and RM 0.70 (US$0.19) respectively.

Intended for Wired Home and Office Networks
The speed and quality of a wired LAN is largely determined by how fast data is transmitted between computers and network components. Whether you are sharing files on a Network Attached Server, printing from a network printer, or connecting several computers through a network switch, you will want to connect your devices with a cable that provides a fast and reliable connection.
The Cat5e Ethernet Patch Cable is a cable assembly that consists of UTP (unshielded twisted pair) cable with an RJ45 male connector crimped onto each end. This patch cord is used to provide connectivity between any two components that have RJ45 jacks. The cable's RJ45 connectors offer universal connectivity to computers and network components, such as routers, switch boxes, network printers, and network attached storage devices.
Built For Superior Network Speed and Reliable Connectivity
The Cat5e Ethernet Patch Cable features RJ45 connectors with gold plating for accurate data transfer and reliability. This cable is capable of transmitting data at speeds of up to 1000 Mbps (or 1 Gigabit per second).
The faster the speed of your connections, the greater your network's ability to stream video, music, and other data that require high bandwidth. (Please note that your network's speed is determined by many factors in addition to the cables, including your router, switch boxes, and components.)
Manufactured for Accuracy and Longevity
The AmazonBasics RJ45 Cat5e Ethernet Patch Cable is a 4PR UTP network cable, which means that it consists of four unshielded twisted pairs surrounded by a durable outer PVC jacket. UTP cabling systems are the most commonly deployed cable type in the United States because they minimize noise and interference that can degrade signal quality. They are used widely in airports, telecommunications systems, building and construction industries, and ATMs.
Slow data transfer and interference can be caused by one pair in a cable "bleeding" signals to another pair through a process known as induction or "crosstalk." This process can cause slow data transfer, or even completely inhibit the transfer of data signals. Crosstalk is minimized by the twisting of the pairs in the cable. Each pair is wound together for the purposes of canceling out noise that can interfere with the signal.
A Cat5e Ethernet Patch Cable can also be referred to as a Network Cable, Computer Cable, Category 5e Cable, Ethernet Cable, or Data/LAN Cable.
