Description

This was the first Portuguese geocoin ever produced! The mentors of the project were two well-known Portuguese geocachers, who convinced a geocoin producer and vendor to back up the idea and produce this nice geocoin. At that time it was not a big sales success, but this is currently one of the most wanted Portuguese geocoins.

The initial ideas, the design selection process and a lot more stories about the early days of this coin can be found in this forum thread.

The geocoin features a red cross in the front and an astrolabe in the back, which invokes the Portuguese history at the time of the discoveries, when portuguese sailors were crossing the oceans and were considered the best navigators in the world.

Lunchtime Gang

Description

Maybe the best description is the one provided by the Lunchtime Gang themselves:

"The history of the Lunchtime Gang:

The Lunchtime Gang was constituted a while ago when two geocachers who work together in the outskirts of Lisbon joined forces and started geocaching in their only free time, i.e. their lunchtimes.

The lunchtimers’ reputation grew such that many an FTF was and is claimed by the Lunchtime Gang and every cache approved before 12H30 had its minutes counted. As a result the gang suffered many a teasing by other cachers who themselves started to "create their own gangs".

The lunchtime geocaching expeditions gave rise to a strong camaraderie and friendship that will surely outlast all the caches in the world.

This geocoin is a celebration of this camaraderie and friendship that the Lunchtime Gang share between them and want to share with friends, acquaintances and the geocaching community."

Description

This was the "oficial" Portuguese geocoin of 2007. The mentor of the project was a Portuguese geocacher who, after some indecisions regarding the selection of a design, proposed this one and took reservations (25 blocks of 10 coins each). In 12 days all the block had been taken and the process for production started. Some more about what happend next can be found in this forum thread.

The geocoin features a well-know portuguese character, named "Zé Povinho" and, on the other side, the Portuguese flag colors and an armillary sphere.

Description

After a lot of discussions about how should be the 2008 Portuguese Geocoin, the geocacher mtrevas decided to organize a poll, inviting geocachers to submit designs, and then inviting everyone to chose the favorite design. Well, the Portuguese Guitar design, submitted by the geocacher Kelux, was the preferred one, and so production started soon after. It was the geocacher PLnauta that handled the interactions with the german producer, from geocoinshop. Well, the story can be found in this forum thread. As a final remark, I should mention that I'm proud to have contributed with the design of the icon for this geocoin.

The geocoin features a Portuguese guitar, which is used to play Fado, a unique Portuguese music style.

Description

This is perhaps one of the most well know geocoins ever produced (well, until the writting of this page). Certainly one of the most appreciated and sought geocoins. There are many reasons for this, but the main reason is certainly because the design is so nice, and because it was produced in many variations of coloring, all of them very beautiful. Many collectors try to gather all the (known) 38 versions of the tranquility geocoin, which is an almost impossible task. To date, only two complete collections were known to exist!

The original idea of producing a Portuguese version of this geocoin was launched by PLnauta on the portuguese forum. Soon a number of other geocachers responded to the call, and the selection of colors and finishing began. In fact, at some point it became possible to mint not just one, but two different Portuguese versions, one of which a very limited one (in polished gold) of just 25 samples.

Description

This coin was a project of two Portuguese Geocachers, TMPinho and CrisN. The geocoin was inspired in the peculiar shape of "Capela do Calvário" Chapel, located in Ferreira do Alentejo, in Portugal. The stones all around the chapel walls remind the ones thrown at Christ during the Calvary. The Chapel is the symbol of the town and it was from the logo of the City Hall that started the first draft of geocoin.

The back of geocoin displays a drawing of "Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição" Church, another Church located in Ferreira do Alentejo. The church hosts an image of Our Lady "Nossa Senhora da Conceição" that is said to have accompanied Vasco da Gama, a famous portuguese Navigators from the XV century, in the discovery of the sea route to India.
