Everybody knows that Bruce Lee studied Wing Chun before creating his own art of Jeet Kune Do. What is less widely known is that he also studied the Filipino Martial Arts with the legendary Danny Inosanto.

The most commonly practiced Filipino Martial Arts are known as Eskrima,  Arnis or Kali, which are basically different words for the same art. Unlike most martial arts, which start out with empty hand and the proceed gradually to weapons, in Arnis sticks.(which represent swords) are taught first, followed by knife, and empty hand techniques are traditionally taught last, at the highest level.

The fundamental drill of Kali is called Sinawali,  in which practitioners hit sticks together in various patterns, developing reflexes, proper body mechanics, and timing. It is perhaps the simplest yet most application rich form of training, making is so easy to learn that anybody can, yet extremely powerful and effective.

Trey Woodford studied Eskrima in CASSASAI Eskrima and Mahardika consolidated Filipino fighting arts, both under Guru Rey Damasco, from Jakarta, 2010-2012, and has also had the privilege of training with Grandmaster Melecio Balbadere,  head of CASSASAI.
