Kimono Vanishing Tradition: Japanese Textiles of the 20th Century
Kimono is a generic term for traditional Japanese clothing; it means thing to wear. This book provides an overview of some traditional garments, introduces types of designs found in twentieth century kimono that are still available, and presents wearable art inspired by kimono from contemporary artists. The text gives price ranges for items that would be reasonable in a store or gallery, and explains what to look for when collecting. As kimono disappear from Japanese wardrobes, they are becoming increasingly collectible. Each of the fourteen chapters opens with the definition of the type of apparel covered therein (including simple, everyday, formal, etc.) as well as their use in Japanese life. The terms are further explained in the Glossary. Over 525 color photographs display brilliant and subtle textile designs and demonstrate beauty in mens, womens, and childrens garments and accessories. Textile and clothing designers will find a wealth of inspiration here. Vintage clothing enthusiasts will be enthralled.

Let me say right up front, I did not take this. Next I'll explain why it's showing up here. While looking for a picture frame in my closet I came across this in a pretty exotic wood frame with 3D embellishments and an oval cutout for the picture. It was really dusty so I took it apart to clean the wood and the glass. The glass is the non-glare type and (now I know) it really wasn't good to have right up against the photo. I scanned it in so I'd have a good record of it and corrected the color. It had become quite orange and a bit faded. And of course I had to clone out lots of little white spots. But I'm really pleased with it. So pleased that I printed it out on some good quality paper and have the new print in the cleaned up frame without the glass. The kids look awfully danged good! It was taken by a studio in San Jose, CA which neglected to put their logo on the front or the back or I'd be willing to advertise it. It's probably defunct by now anyhow since this was taken in January of 1977. Ann reminded me that she had taken a tumble on the way into the studio. That's why she has a freshly bloody knee. Poor little tyke!! At least the blood wouldn't show on the classy orange carpet.
