The Potting Shed (Smith & Hawken)
The Potting Shed (Smith & Hawken)
A richly photographed full-color wish book, The Potting Shed from Smith & Hawken celebrates the room that is as much a workshop for the gardener as the kitchen is for the cook. Practical and romantic, idea-filled and beautiful, it is imbued with the Smith & Hawken sensibility: quality, authenticity, and a return to the old ways. There are chapters on the history of the potting shed. The gardener's tools, and how to store and care for them. And seasonal joys and labors, including spring--with tips on germinating seeds, using cloches, transplanting seedlings; summer--the time for picking flowers for potpourri; fall--how to dry herbs, plant spring-blooming bulbs, and gather seeds for next year; and winter--when it's time to relax in front of the woodstove and pore over catalogs. Whether the "potting shed" is a cleared-off space on a kitchen counter, a corner in the garage, an old table and wash basin against the side of the house--or an actual shed--The Potting Shed is every gardener's dream of where the garden begins. Flower Pot
Mosaiced flower pot I made, using stones, slate chunks, broken dishes, shells, and thrifted jewelry. This is for my friend Janice's animal print decor. Christmas gift 2004. I learned how to make three-dimensional mosaics in a class by Carolyn Machado in Laguna Beach. There are several chips of slate and tile stacked atop one another, then embellished with other goodies.

Flower Power!
Jerry shares is secrets on soil preparation, selection, fertilizing, pruning, composting, and weed and pest control. In addition, you get Jerry's list of favorite tried-and-true plants. You'll also learn about your favorite plant's soil, sun, and watering needs, along with its height, blossom color, and flowering time, all of which will make your garden planting a snap.

Jerry Baker is known as America's master gardener--millions of would-be gardeners have warmed to his folksy PBS appearances and made bestsellers out of The Impatient Gardener and The Impatient Gardener's Lawn Book. Like Baker's other books, Flower Power is inexpensive and accordingly short on pretty pictures, but long on good advice, simply presented. For example:
In spring, generously apply wood ashes from your fireplace all around your perennials, several inches deep. This will help to enrich the soil. You can also use dried dog food for the same purpose. It contains many of the same nutrients found in organic fertilizers, such as blood meal and bone meal.
Flower Power gives no-nonsense directions for growing annuals, perennials, bulb plants, roses, and flowering shrubs and trees, with Baker's enthusiasm bursting through on every page.
