Handmade Modern: Mid-Century Inspired Projects for Your Home
Seventy–two step–by–step projects for modern do–it–yourself home and office design, by world–renowned designer Todd Oldham.
Love the look of mid–century, modern, retro design, but don't feel like dropping two weeks' pay on an Eames chair? Todd Oldham shares his passion for mid–century modern homes with over 72 do–it–yourself projects for anyone who loves crafts and longs to add character to every corner of their home.
Each project is charted through step–by–step photos and instructions until the fabulously mod end. Other projects include home–computer face–lifts, Xerox wallpaper, aluminium lighting fixtures, and cosy shoe–storage systems. In additional to Todd's brilliantly engineered projects, the book comes complete with a tutorial on modern home design in the form of sidebars and short essays throughout –everything from that now–famous Eames chair to the case–study houses of the 1950s.
Handmade Modern promises to revolutionise the way the reader looks at his or her own home and capacity to beautify a space. Chic, accessible, and fun, this is the achievable new look of modern home design.

Very unusual geometric black and white railing finials, interesting against the rough wood. Original caption for this European house: "Here wood, rough plaster, an brick strike just the right rustic note, countered by the uncompromising modernity of the overall style of furnishings and such built-in elements as the spiral staircase and the railing of the library and study above the living room. Despite the severity of the setting, the details all add up to an atmosphere of warmth and comfort. On the lower floor of the large main room, two seating groups - a sunken one in front of the fireplace, another along the window - complement and at the same time contrast with the each other, offering quite different settings for relaxed sociability at different times of day. Evenings, the fireplace offers coziness, and the built-in bookcases promote a mood of quiet withdrawal. By day the large window offers both light and a view. Since the shelves do not cover the lower part of the wall, there is a large recess at either side of the fireplace area which contains supplementary indirect lighting. The red picture is hung slightly off center, making a striking effect when seen from the door. There is even a sight gag: the head of the large polar bear skin glares up at one out of the conversation pit."
