Fridge / Fermenter Controller Kit Idea
Fridge / Fermenter Controller Kit Idea
I have been looking forward to providing simple electronic kits to help people with homesteader projects. My first kit is going to be a thermostat with 4-line text display. The idea is this thermostat can be used with a device like a chest freezer to convert it over to a refrigerator. This setup can reduce home refrigeration utilities by 20x. The same kit could also be used as a fermentation control device. Using this kit would allow for a precision temperature controlled environment which is important for things like tempeh, yogurt, cheese, wine, etc... Here is the sketch of how things would connect. When being used as a fermenter a heating element (20W light bulb) would normally be used instead of the freezers compressor.
New/old fridge
New/old fridge
We just got a vintage fridge! A GE Monitor Top. Monitor Tops were made from 1927 until 1939, if I recall correctly. Researching old ads for these, it looks like this model is probably from 1931-1932. (The hinges are the key feature for dating, along with the shape of the control box.) The thermometer shows a high temp because the fridge was just turned on when I took the pic. A few hours later, the temp is lower. Up next to the evaporator (the freezer thingy up there), it's actually darn near freezing. Lower in the fridge it's about 41F at the moment. It can be set to be colder, too, so I think it will be fine as far as that is concerned.

From Word to Kindle: Self Publishing Your Kindle Book with Microsoft Word, or How to Format a Text-Only Document in Microsoft Word and Convert to a Kindle eBook

One of the most common methods of preparing Kindle Books -- and one of the most highly recommended by Amazon -- is to start with a Microsoft Word document, convert it to HTML, and then submit it on Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing site for final conversion to Kindle format. You can find instructions for this around the Web and in books on Kindle publishing. Most often, these instructions are based on the premise that Word's HTML output requires extensive alteration and cleanup before submission.

This is exactly wrong.

At least for a text-only book, Word's HTML is almost perfectly suited to Kindle conversion with little or no change. Yes, Word's export generates a lot of excess code, but not as much if you choose the right option -- and the excess that remains is ignored by the Kindle converter. Meanwhile, the best way to control the limited kinds of formatting available for Kindle Books is with formatting you apply to the Word document itself. You might never have to open the HTML file at all!

Follow these quick tips to get your text-only ebook into a format that Kindle readers will love.
