Female Infanticide

What is infanticide?
Infanticide is the unlawful killing of very young children. Female infanticide is the intentional killing of baby girls. Female infanticide is more common than male infanticide, and it is another cause of the large sex ratio.

"Generally. poor parents, they do not like to have female child. The parents, even sometimes don't have a feeling of sad when they kill their babies, because what they think, within a minute the child can die. Instead of the child struggling and dying day by day, everyday by poverty. What they think, they want to in a minute to kill their baby." - Glory Dass, Orphanage Director. Jesus Mercy Home Association, Tamil Nadu.
  • Women kill their babies shortly after birth in several ways. (from It's a Girl documentary)
    • they put a wet cloth over the babies face, so they can't breath, and so they suffocate and die within a few minutes. They are poisoned, or sometimes rice is given to them.
    • If they are left in a box, animals can get to them, or they die from exposure.
    • The girls that do live are often victims of abuse and neglect.
  • Female infanticide has been a problem for centuries, as a result of the patriarchy in India's society. Their customs and traditions have made a huge impression that sons bring blessing, wealth, and strength the family, while girls do not. They are often thought of as burdens on the family.
Baby girls are usually killed for financial reasons.
Boys bring in the money through dowry, and they are more likely to be employed than girls so the family is financially stable and they will always be apart of the family. Girls do not bring in money through dowry and make less money. Once they get married, they leave the family and become part of the husbands family. That is why they are more likely to be killed than males. Parents do not wish to pay for dowry even if they are poor or rich, because either way, you would have to pay for dowry.
