In contrast to the 3 glycosyltransferase genes of GGTA1, A3GALT2, and GBGT1, there are more variations among the genes in the ABO gene family. In addition to the combinations of L and G for codons 266 and 268 in human A transferase and M and A in human B transferase, there are additional amino acid combinations. These include A and G in dogs and cats and T and A in greater galagos and hedgehogs. Whether proteins with other combinations exhibit functional transferase activity remains to be determined.
