SU-CML - Hypersonic Ablation

Significance:

Currently customized in-house finite element analysis (FEA) tools are used to predict the thermal and ablative response of pyrolyzing materials.
However, recent improvements in commercial FEA products provide the possibility of numerous benefits for ablation analysis, including versatility, usability, technical support, and more.
Adding ablation modeling and analysis to a commercial package, such as ABAQUS/COMSOL, that also offers structural and CFD fluid flow capabilities would establish an efficient and cost-effective modeling process.

Research Highlights:

A novel FEA computational procedure with ABAQUS has been proposed to predict the thermal and ablative response of the TACOT 3.0 test case pyrolyzing material (1-D).
FEA consists of multiple user subroutines and the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) adaptive remesh algorithm, enabling a tight coupling between the heat conduction considering material decomposition and the progressive material removal.
Predictions compare favorably with those predicted using NASA FIAT, i.e., a well-validated pyrolyzing ablation code.
U. of Florida has decided to exert software copyright to the developed ABAQUS user subroutines, Jan. 4, 2018.
