Vortec is a small, nifty application that I made to change the wallpaper of my computer at the press of a button. It is just a couple of lines of code, but is very useful at that. The name Vortec comes from the Vortec Space wallpaper from Windows Xp, which was the only one I liked in Xp. Vortec is basically a batch file, which i would rather quote over here for a cleared understanding:
For those who don’t know it is a wallpaper changing utility I made to ease the process. It chooses a random wallpaper, and applies it as the wallpaper. However it does not go beyond its current directory(next version?), have a bulky setup, evaluation version, or any settings screen. You double click, and it’s ready. It does not reside in the background, and makes use of three nifty utilities : nircmd, to run it without a screen, jpg2bmp to convert a wallpaper, and clwcp as the command line wallpaper changer.
Go and read the Vortec.bat file inside the setup to understand how it works. It is really a cool way to change wallpapers. And as of its name, you may remember the Vortec Space wallpaper from Windows Xp, don't you?
UPDATE : Just noticed an issue with the newer version, that removes your wallpaper (turns screen black/white) if you log off, or leave the computer for a while. Just to tell, I'm working on patching this issue right now. The updated version should be up in some time.
UPDATE 2 : Uploading the new version which uses the appdata folder to save them bmp file. This is a fix for the black screen problem sometimes reported earlier, especially if you left it on one wallpaper for a long time. And the answer was just taking a leaf out of Microsoft's book . As for the update, I'm working on a version which uses the entire directory tree as the wallpaper source. That would most probably be the last update. What more could you desire?
UPDATE 3 : Now Vortec comes with a slick installer, and runs with better ease, and complete subfolder support. Read the installer thoroughly before continuing.
