AWARDS 2011 Georgia Circuit - Honourable Mention MERIT AWARD. Yesterday we discovered that there were two pythons living under our outside cupboard. It is the mating season. Reproduction mode begins in the spring, like other snakes. They lay eggs in late spring to early summer. Each clutch is between 10 and 50 eggs. The female incubates the eggs by coiling around them, and she has the ability to 'shiver' to increase her body temperature which in turn helps incubate the eggs. Incubation lasts between 10 and 15 weeks. Hatchlings are about 30 cm long. Sexual maturity is reached at 3 years, and they can live for up to 20 years. Carpet pythons are mostly solitary but have been found to congregate during mating season. Male carpet pythons will battle in the spring, during mating season, with their bodies coiled and heads over 1m off the ground. They often savagely attack each other by biting, and can seriously injure other males. They often will aggregate and will fight every day. The temperament of these snakes is widely variable. Some will hiss and strike if approached, with a painful bite that requires medical attention. Others are quite docile, however, and will allow themselves to be handled.

While visiting my eldest daughter her neighbor decided to drop in bringing with him his pet Carpet Python to show hubby. Needles to say I was not at all impressed as these things put shivers up my spine but I have to admit it does have very pretty markings. I could not resist the opportunity in taking this picture to share with you all.
