Field trip

A full day field trip will depart at 9:00 on Friday the 9th September. The field trip will visit the ‘František Xaver Franc Archaeological Nature Trail’, which commemorates a prominent 19th-century amateur archaeologist. The trail runs through the ‘Kozel’ forest, which has been in existence since the 15th century, and contains a remarkable range of preserved prehistoric and medieval relics. The trail passes through an Eneolithic hilltop settlement and a Bronze and Iron Age barrow cemetery. Next to these, medieval features such as hollow ways, ponds, fields, a gold panning site, a deserted village, a fortified manor and a castle with a siege camp may be seen, in addition to remnants of Early Modern forest crafts.

Highlights include burial mounds on Hajek, located on the western slope of the Kozel forest district, between the castle Kozel and the ruins of Lopata castle. Ninety one mounds have been identified, five of them containing burials with weapons dating from the Middle Brozne age.

Rotunda
The field trip will also visit this Romanesque rotunda, which was probably constructed in the second half of the 10th century. The rotunda was rebuilt many times, but preserved its original shape. This building serves as a rare example of the evolution of religious architecture in this region. Interestingly, the Rotunda is is associated with an early medieval hillfort. A series of archaeological excavations have been carried out at the hillfort, enriching our understanding of the sequence here.

The field trip will end with a tour of the Pilsner Urquell brewery. The tour will highlight the ingredients used to brew Pilsner Urquell beer, and culminates in a tasting of unfiltered Pilsner Urquell beer in the brewery's historical cellars. More information on the tour is available here: http://www.prazdrojvisit.cz/en/tours/pilsner-urquell-brewery-tour/.

The field trip will end in Pilsen at approximately 17:00. Those needing to depart earlier in the day could depart before the brewery tour commences.
