Avon & Somerset Injured Deer Policy.
Avon & Somerset’s Injured Deer Team.
The Injured Deer Policy (IDP) has operated within the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) since 1987.
It was originally put into place to deal rapidly and humanely with deer injured by road traffic accidents (RTAs) or similar incidents on private land within the Mendip Hills AONB.
The IDP team is now being used by landowners and local authorities over the whole of the Avon and Somerset Police area.
It has been developed in close consultation with Avon and Somerset Police to meet a growing increase in road traffic incidents in their area.
The IDP team members are chosen carefully and their work is controlled by a code of safe working practice and risk assessment. The IDP team's service is offered free of charge.
Information collected by the IDP team is supplied to The Deer Collisions Project and to the DVLA.
Injured Deer should be reported as soon as possible to either the Landowner or to the Police.
