10 Ways to Save Money on Your Move

1- Take valuables with you - Valuables, such as cash, coins, jewelry, photographs, and important papers should be taken with you or sent ahead.  Be sure to use a traceable service, such as FedEx and United Parcel Service.

2- You've binged; now purge.  Here's the most basic way to save on moving:  Don't move so much stuff.   Basically, anything that you don't need, that you haven't unpacked and used yourself in more than a year is probably fair game to not make the next move with you.

3- Purge efficiently.  A corollary to that last tip:  People often have time-consuming garage sales to thin their belongings, thinking they'll make lots of money.  They often don't come out ahead when considering the amount of time spent to prepare and hold a sale.  Just donate the stuff to Goodwill or another charity.  The stuff will be carted off and out of your hair, saving you lots of time and snagging you a tax deduction.  Everybody benefits!

4- Most moving companies won't insure boxes you pack yourself.  Most people are covered by their homeowner's policy, so check with your insurance company.

5- Move at off times.  If you're moving locally, consider moving away from mid-month and month-end.  We are always very busy during those days, but when business is slower, we may offer a lower rate.

6- Plan ahead.  If you're not organized in your move, you're going to be wasting time.  And time is money.  Being organized will save you money in perhaps unexpected ways.  For example:  You could end up paying for an extra month's (utility) service that you don't need if you don't get the service cut off in time.

7- Take things apart.  Disassemble items yourself to save money.  Our crew will take extra time and will charge accordingly to disassemble items like cribs, bunk beds, outdoor play sets and water beds.  Time is money.

8- Be reachable by phone - Make sure we are able to reach you by phone during your move.  This can save time and storage costs if the driver is ready to deliver and you are ready to receive the shipment.  Be sure to have the driver's name and cell phone number to allow for fast and easy communication.

9- Segregate personal travel items - The items traveling with you, such as clothes and papers, should be put in one place or in a vehicle you are taking with you.  Avoid having those items loaded on the truck and having to find them later.

10- Check that all rooms are empty and all lights turned off.
