Iberia ordered 8 A350-900s in August 2014 and doubled its order one year later. The fuel-efficient European aircraft will replace the A340s of the Spanish carrier till 2020 together with the new A330-200s. IB's A350-900s will feature a premium economy class and mainly fly to South America and the U.S. west coast. New Asian routes will also be made possible as there are more A330/A350s on order than A340 to replace.

After a successful financial turnaround, Iberia chose the perfect aircraft to make its route network and expansion possible and sustainable. Being a part of the International Airlines Group, Iberia might also take over AerLingus' A350 orders in the future as the latter is having second thoughts about its purchase and might opt for the A330neo.
