Author's Introduction:

This book is about cash for gold business, a practical guide to buying gold jewellery from the public. We cover all essential aspects of cash for gold business, such as how to pick and market a location, how to determine the quality of gold and tell real gold from fake, where to sell gold. It aims to provide enough information to set up a successful store and make all the money gold has to offer this year, and the years to come.

Buying gold is a service, a convenient outlet to recycle gold and return money to the consumer. It is not the price that we pay - it is our courteous manner and honesty what makes people come back to us. A chapter in this book is devoted to customer relations.

This book doesn’t teach much about diamonds. Buying diamonds requires training and supervision, because the value of the diamond is a personal opinion of the buyer or appraiser, and not precise science.

Fraudulent Zikos Jewlers Wedding Ban (Labeled 14K Gold but Actually Silver or worse)
Fraudulent Zikos Jewlers Wedding Ban (Labeled 14K Gold but Actually Silver or worse)
On May 15, 2001 we bought a 14K ring from Zikos Jewelers in New Hope, Pennsylvania to be a duplicate of a 14K ring that was lost. George Zikos said he would send it in four to five weeks and if I didn't like it he would give me my money back. After it did not arrive in six weeks I called. He became belligerent and said I was rushing him. I said I needed for an event on July 25. He said he would do that. During the week preceding July 25 I called several times and he did not answer my calls or return my messages. Around August 1 he said I had to come back to New Hope to pick it up. I told him that was not in the original agreement and that I had prepaid the delivery charge of $20. After considerable back and forth, the ring finally arrived on September 2, 2011. The ring in design was not even close to the original. Further it felt light. We did the Windex test. If it was gold it would have kept its luster. Incredibly on Day 1 it tarnished! I told him and said that was a sign that it was silver. He said silver was in it (despite it being stamped 14K). I asked that my money be refunded. He said I could only get a store credit but that he did not want to have any further dealings with me and hung up. Even if I had been willing to take the store credit I can't cash it because he won't deal with me. But I would have to be insane to accept that from somebody under these circumstances I am at a total loss. The guy robbed me point blank. It's hard tim imagine that somebody with a storefront on the main street right in the heart of New Hope could be so flagrant. What should have been a joyful experience has now turned into a nightmare.
Prout's Neck, Scarborough, Maine
Prout's Neck, Scarborough, Maine
I had a girlfriend back in 2002 whose family was obscenely wealthy. These pictures were taken in and around Prout's Neck, Maine, which is close to Scarborough. This place is virtually a private island - there's a narrow strip of land - the 'neck' I suppose - which connects it to the mainland. I have never mixed with such incredibly wealthy WASPs in my life, and probably never will again. Some of the richest people in the USA have second homes here. Which makes me wonder how big their first homes are... My girlfriend's mother's vacation home must have been at least 3000 square feet , and that was one of the smaller ones. There are homes here in the region of 8000 -12000 square feet. The wealth is obscene, and yet I relished it like the most guilty of pleasures. In addition to this being the exclusive province of rich WASPs, it is also the location of Winslow Homer's studio, which I visited. There was also a big fuss, to-do and hoo-hah about Bush coming to do a fund raising gig at the hotel on Prout's Neck. Sadly we left before he arrived. Residents that were not attending Bush's speech at the hotel were to remain in their houses for the duration. For that asshole? Jesus.
