A Presenters Who's Who & the 8th AFHS-Mn Digital Archives

Early Videotaped Presentations
1. The 8th AFHS-Mn, as a group, was started in 1982 by members who were veterans and who often also volunteered at the Planes of Fame Air Museum-East. They continued meeting after the museum moved to Palm Springs, California in 1997. Some VHS tapes still exist of presentations at the Planes of Fame Museum-East from the early 1990s. One of these, saved by Mike Madsen, included a presentation by four WWII aviation Medal of Honor winners, including Joe Foss, Jeff DeBlanc, James Swett, and Robert Galer. Mike Madsen, who volunteered at the Museum for 12 years, has furnished valuable historic VHS tapes of that period to the 8th AFHS-Mn Digital Archives including footage of Ted Murphy and Steve Hinton flying the Stearman Biplane.
2. VHS Tapes from 2001 to 2003 of some of the 8th AFHS-Mn presentations at the American Legion venue (since torn down) were also recorded by and were archived by Dick Hill on VHS tape. With the assistance of the MN Legacy Fund Grant these have been digitized and put on DVD with copies put in the 8th AFHS-Mn Digital Archives. VHS tapes are estimated to last 15 years. DVDs are estimated to last longer and may need conversion in the future to newer formats.
This project was made possible by the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the vote of Minnesotans on November 4, 2008. Administered by the Minnesota Historical Society.
