Olympus W-10 Digital Voice Recorder with Built-in Digital Camera
Olympus America (141680) W10 Digital Recorder87% (8)
The W-10 doesn't just make it easy to record, it makes it easy to manage audio and image files, too. With two folders devoted to audio files--each capable of storing 100 messages--and a dedicated folder for image files that can hold 250 pictures, organizing and locating important files is simple. You can even move files between folders and erase a single file or an entire folder. Thumb-pad navigation is available with a jog dial, and the W-10's built-in 16 MB memory provides up to three hours of recording in long-play mode (other modes are standard and high-quality). Audio is stored as WAV files, and images are JPEGs. The recorder can be voice activated, and it even has an alarm feature, so you'll never miss an interview. Included Voice Album software lets you display pictures on a PC monitor in slide show fashion and add descriptions and narration to recorded images.
An LCD panel shows recording time remaining, sound quality, folder name, and other non-image-related information (though the LCD cannot be used to review pictures). When the recorder is hooked up to an external monitor, however, visual indexing lets you display an image while playing related audio. The W-10 uses a 0.3 Megapixel CMOS chip for visual indexing (640 x 480 resolution). The W-10 runs on two AAA batteries (not supplied) and cannot run from an AC adapter. Two batteries run about 24 hours. Supported operating systems include Microsoft Windows 98, 98SE, Me, 2000 Professional, and XP Professional and Home editions. Your computer must be running an Intel Pentium II class 233 MHz or faster with 64 MB RAM minimum and a Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 sound board (or 100 percent compatible). Your video card and display must be 800 x 600 pixels minimum with 256 colors minimum. One available USB port is required.
Leica D-Lux 5 (non processed JPEGS)
When I posted this, I hadn't updated Photoshop to read DL5 RAW files--this is one of the non-processed JPEGs samples from the D-Lux 5. Straight out of camera, 100% UN-processed JPEGs were quite good if not excellent. I've posted several JPEGs shot in various daylights/night/indoor--Harvard pics were shot around noon; Christian Science Park around 10am; The "Field" bar shots between 330pm and 6:00pm. Prudential area between 4 and 6pm; picture of the red flash light around 8:00pm inside the house with lights turned off. So here are my thoughts on DL5, based on having used the DL4: 1. I love the colors. They are saturated but not overly unrealistic. Colors feel very "Leica." DL4's colors were good never wowed me. 2. DL5 focus is lightning fast and accurate. I took some shots while walking down to Harvard--snapped pictures without stopping and most of my shots came out fine. The focus, I feel is faster than the DL4. 3. DL5 is sharp at 24mm all the way to 90mm! DL5 is sharper than DL4 and have better details and better colors (color preference is subjective, of course. I just like DL5's saturated colors. Besides, it's easier to tone down the saturation than to add more, since adding saturation, to me, seems a little unnatural in the results). 4. ISO! I have never used a small digital compact that look as good in 1600ISO as the DL5. Most of the shots from the VERY low-lit bar were shot with 1600ISO. Some were shot with Shutter priority to get some motion blur. 5. Macro mode is amazing--1cm focusing distance, just like the Ricoh GRD3. Of course, DL5 still suffers from typical small sensor issue--lack of a broad dynamic range--leading to blown out highlights and detail-less shadows. But, such issues are easily fixed in LR or PS. With such great JPEGs results, I won't have to feel so eager waiting for RAW support in LR. Oh, one thing I dislike about DL5 is there is no grip. When I sold my DL4, I gave away the grip. I think I'll have to get another one. Grip, to me, is essential when I shoot on the street. It gives me better stability and quicker framing (because I can move my hand much faster without the camera slipping off or have to worry about dropping the camera--yes I am using a wrist strap. Neck strap is too restricting and draws too much attention (as a tourist, even if you're not). Just my 2-cents.JPEG VS RAW
What is the difference between JPEG and RAW? Day and Night! Now that I found out how to hack my Canon Powershot A710 IS to shoot RAW, it is pretty exciting. Above is the same image, taken at the same instance with a 15 second exposure. The camera sees what is on the right, but normally, this image is not written to memory, and the camera gives the JPG image on the left. I should add that it was nearly pitch black with just some moonlight. Even the JPG shows a little more then can be seen with the naked eye. Both sides are completely unprocessed other then the necessary CRW>DNG>TIFF conversion for the RAW file. It will be a while before you start seeing HDR shots from RAW in my photostream. I still have a many JPG shoots to go through before I get to the time I started using RAW in December. The story behind this photo? On my middle of the night drives home from Nashville I usually need to stop at interstate exits and jump up and down so I don't fall asleep. I was wondering about how this scene would look with RAW. Since I had my gorilla pod with me, I set it up on the roof of my truck.
