Junk food causing childhood obesity: study A new obesity study has found children are exercising more but obesity levels are still rising. The University of Sydney study has found the number of children and teenagers exercising is 20 per cent higher than the 1997 figures. But the report also showed increases in the number of children aged between four and 16, who are overweight or obese, 26 per cent of boys and 23 per cent of girls. One of the authors of the study, Dr Michael Booth, says the findings show over eating is causing weight gain. "The problem with overweight isn't so much that kids are inactive and need to do more exercise," he said. "Most already are quite active but the problem is primarily that they're simply eating too many calories and primarily through junk foods." Dr Booth says researchers found fitness levels had significantly improved since the 1997 results. "We used exactly the same protocols in both studies and we contacted the New South Wales Department of Sport and Recreation and they've told us that their enrolments in junior sport are all time highs as well," he said. "What we do need to do very urgently is to curb marketing of high fat foods to kids." New South Wales Health Minister John Hatzistergos is calling for changes to the marketing and advertising of junk food in light of the study's findings. Mr Hatzistergos says while parents have a responsibility in feeding their children properly, the media and food manufacturers also play a role. "The whole issue of marketing and promotion of foods which are high in fat and sugar is certainly one that needs attention," he said. "The reality is that you can't have a situation where by these foods are going to be promoted in the past so as to encourage people to consume more and more quantities of them and that's the real dilemma we face."
