5. Schedule

Spring of 2017

From October through to March, we simply rehearse, learn new material, enjoy just piping and drumming.  We generally don't have any performances.  Then St. Patrick's Day comes (in March), and the world changes!

If you're looking at the band's website for the first time, enjoy exploring!  Please see the "Notes" following this paragraph.

Note:

1. This schedule is speaking to band members, as a means for keeping information available at all times, so it will be "operational" in tone.

2. Schedules are always subject to some changes, and should be considered "provisional."  We will seek to provide up-to-date information, but it's always best to call to confirm the Highlanders presence anywhere.  You may call Neil Gillette at 303-332-6133, if you have questions.  You may email at neil80222@gmail.com .

How Current is this information?  Updated on Monday, May 22, 2017 -- 4:00 p.m.

Weather Note regarding Practices:
Kiowa is at 6,200 feet and part of the "Palmer Divide," which is notorious for having severe weather.
In the last twelve months, we've cancelled practice due to snow, ice, flooded road conditions, and in warm months, high wind and severe thunder-storms (if there's hail, there's probably a tornado-watch on).  So...unless it's bright, sunny and calm out, you might do well to call to make sure that practice is still happening, prior to making the trip out to Kiowa. If the weather looks questionable, call Jim Campbell (303-243-0300 cell), John Kummer (
303-646-2724) or Neil Gillette (303-332-6133 cell)

Practices--

Our main practice time is on Tuesday Evenings in Franktown, Colorado., for the summer months.
This practice is at Living Water Christian Church, 7049 E. Park Drive, Franktown, CO 80116 with a general start time of around 6:00 p.m. led by Pipe Corporal Rob Bratsch.  We often have drumming instruction and Highland dance, too.   The purpose of this practice is to help band members get consistent weekly instruction and rehearsal.  In the event of bad weather, call to make certain Tuesday practice is being held (call Neil Gillette 303-332-1633).

2017 Schedule of Practices
and Known Performances

  • Please note that when we have a performance on a weekend, we almost always cancel the practice on that weekend--the rationale being that members have already given up one day for the band, and that at least one day should be for family and home activities.
  • There are exceptions to this--St. Patrick's Day is a full 2-day push.  Further, there are two-day Highland Games (Celtic Festivals), where we ask everyone to come both days.
  • Once in a while, there might be a situation, where a few members perform for an event, but we don't want to give up practice for everyone.
  • In the end, all members need to be self-motivated about practicing on their own and being prepared to show-up really ready to perform at a gig--most performances are very similar in format, and we will almost always welcome members who have been away, but want to perform.  You are members of this band and we rely on you to make every performance and practice that you can...also, you become better pipers, drummers and dancers if you don't miss practices or performances much.
  • Finally--and this is important--changes happen, so consider this schedule "provisional" (open to change);  check the website or make a phone call and get up-to-date information.

Music:
These tunes are our "Top Ten List"
(which is our "Basic Core List" of tunes 1-4, and our "Intermediate Core List" of tunes 5-10)--

 1. Amazing Grace

 2. Mairi's Wedding

 3. The Rowan Tree
(pronounced (by Scots, at least): "Rall-in" not "Row-in")

 4. The Marine Corps Hymn

 5. Bide Awa'

 6. Skye Boat Song

 7. Garryowen  (pronounced: "Gary - owen")

 8. Green Hills of Tyrol

 9. When the Battle is Over

10.
Scotland the Brave

If you can't come to band practices, you can get yourself set-up on the tunes.

If you are a newer piper, you should have "The Basic Core Tunes List" and Intermediate Core Tunes List, which together are the first ten tunes memorized and able to play on the pipes.  Member-Pipers will always be welcome to "get back on board" in the band, knowing that we will play most of the top ten tunes at performances.

Better, more experienced pipers should have the "Advanced Core Tunes List" (the next ten tunes) under their fingers.  If you are really needing a challenge, we have tunes (or sets) 14, 15, 16, and 17, and also have the "Extra Tunes List"  beyond that. I'm soon going to be uploading the dance tunes, as well.

Please have the tunes down by the numbers... don't learn something from the Extra Tunes List before you have all the tunes down from the Core Lists.

Check back on this site, for any updates.  You can tell how current the information is by the "updated on..." date.
