The Aircraft Wireless Intercom System (AWIS) provides unencrypted wireless communication between crew members during flight operations and hot refueling, loading, offloading, and re-arming of CH-47 and UH-60 aircraft. The unencrypted AWIS consists of one aircraft interface unit (AIU) for each aircraft and one mobile equipment (ME) for each aft crew member. AWIS features: • Full duplex, voice-activated, hands-free mode and a push-to-talk mode • 50 independent networks with up to 30 users on each network • Simultaneous omnidirectional communications among all users within the aircraft network • Wireless, tether-free communications capability. Limited fielding of unencrypted AWIS to Army Black Hawk MEDEVAC units will begin in 4Q FY09. The encrypted ME and AIU (shown in the middle of the illustration above) will begin fielding in 2Q FY11.
