6 DOF Platform Project Site

We are seniors at the University of Maine working towards our Mechanical Engineering degrees.  This motion platform is our two semester capstone project that will integrate the knowledge we have gathered in a variety of classes throughout our undergraduate careers.

Project at a Glance:

The end result of this project is a six degree of freedom motion simulation platform rated for at least 400 lbs. The platform will be able to be ‘driven’ by a user and also initiate movement to help facilitate the research done at the Virtual Environment and Multimodal Interaction Lab at the University of Maine.

Below is a video showing the range of motion of our full-scale platform:

Project Objectives

There are various goals and milestones that will need to be reached throughout the duration of this project, but the following are the final product deliverables:
  • Design and fabricate motion platform
  • Program the platform to respond to commands from a joystick
  • Code the platform to coincide with a virtual reality simulation
  • Create an open source forum for the design, fabrication, and programming of a motion platform
