Vintage 80's: London Street Photography
'No other city has the variety of hairstyles male and female that parade the streets of London. The bouffant, the duck arse, the white wings of power swept over the ears, the coxcomb punk, the flat top, the social outrider's bowl cut. They're all there to make a place. In respect of the hair of the 80s, the rest of the world was dead from the neck up.'86% (16)
Buy a 35mm camera at the beginning of 1980 and spend the next 10 years walking around London taking half a roll of black and white a day and photograph whatever happens in front of you.
You get Mick Jagger, New Romantics, Ra Ra skirts, Boy George, Sloane Rangers.
The beginning of Covent Garden, Yuppies, The IRA bombings, the Iranian Embassy siege.

The Old Days - OK the 80s Were Weird For Me
There is just nothing bad about this photo. I mean, you might say to yourself now "Wow, that's an 'interesting' fashion choice." (and let's face it, you totally said "interesting" in a sarcastic one of voice, didn't you?) But the reality of it is that the fashion trend that I set on this day, over twenty-five years ago, is a lumbering behemoth that will slowly, but surely, take the world by storm. Get in on the ground floor while there's still time.Bizarre 80s jumpsuit
I saw this in an op shop (thrift store) today, but I didn't buy it. I think taking photos of it was enough to satisfy me. This incredibly bizarre jumpsuit, probably dating from about 1982 or 83 was designed by Anthea Crawford. I like the colours from an artistic point of view, but I cannot imagine anyone wearing something so unflattering. It really does remind me of a clown suit. Front view. I do like the square buttons!
Back In The Days documents the emerging hip-hop scene from 1980-1989 - before it became what is today's multi-million-dollar multinational industry. Back in the days, gangs would battle not with guns, but by breakdancing. Back in the days, the streets - not corporate planning - set the standards for style. Back in the days, Jamel Shabazz was on the scene, photographing everyday people hangin' in Harlem, kickin' it in Queens, and cold chillin' in Brooklyn. Street styling with an attitude not seen in fashion for another twenty years to come, Shabazz's subjects strike poses that put supermodels to shame - showing off Kangol caps and Gazelle glasses, shell-top Adidas and suede Pumas with fat laces, shearling coats and leather jackets, gold rope chains, door-knocker earrings, name belts, boom boxes, and other designer finery. For anyone who wants to know what "keepin' it real" means, Back In the Days is the book of your dreams.Similar posts:
