Welcome to the 5 Tasks of Mesopotamia Webquest! The 5 Tasks of Mesopotamia Webquest will begin your journey with the geography and culture of this ancient land between two rivers. The Mesopotamians left a significant record of their lives and the development of their civilization for us to interpret and appreciate. From the study of Hammurabi to cuneiform writing, to a biography or memoir of a significant Mesopotamian and appreciation for the geography, the five tasks will open your eyes to the contributions of its people.
Day #1 45 mins- Geography/Culture Introduction
Today, you and your research partner will be viewing an introductory video on Mesopotamia. First, watch the video with your partner. You will take notes on the back side of the page entitled "video notes". Next, you will complete the Big Idea chart. To do this, you will look at your video notes, and identify evidence from the video to support the BIG IDEA claim of "Mesopotamia developed culturally and had many geographical advantages that made it a thriving ancient civilization.
Day #2 45 mins- Geography of Mesopotamia
Today, you are going to complete a Tree Map depicting the details of the map of Mesopotamia. You are going to examine the following maps of the area of Mesopotamia. Think of THREE different categories to list as your evidence. To do this, look for geographical features such as bodies of water, mountains, deserts, etc. Once you've decided on your THREE categories, write the names in the EVIDENCE box. Finally, in the boxes below, list the examples from the maps that fit into your evidence boxes.
Day #3 45 mins - Important Rulers of Mesopotamia
Today, you are going to researching a famous ruler from Mesopotamia. Please choose one of the following individuals:
Nebuchadnezzar II, Sargon, Gilgamesh, Enheduanna, or Hammurabi. One you've chosen, please click on the link for the person that you've chosen.
You are then going to read a detailed description of the person that you have chosen. Once you have done the reading research, you will complete the Biographical Book Report Form. First, look at the following definitions of autobiography and biography. You will write the definitions of each on your document. Next, you will complete a timeline of important life events of the person that you chose.
Day #4 45 mins- History of Writing and Cuneiform
Today, you are going to explore the history of writing, which originated in Mesopotamia! You will start your research by clicking the link below and reading through each page of information. You will go from page to page by clicking the "arrow" towards the bottom of each page. MAKE SURE YOU AND YOUR PARTNER READ EVERYTHING!!!!!
After reading, both you and your partner will be recording information from the internet research. First, you will fill in one side of the chart with YOUR name and YOUR information. Then, you will discuss what you wrote with your partner, and vice versa. As you discuss, your partner will record your information on their paper and then you will record your partners information on your paper. Collaboration!
After you and your partner, have recorded your information, you will now write your name in cuneiform. If you are completing this assignment on paper, you will just fill in your name in the "Partner 1" row. If you are doing this assignment electronically, both you and your partner will record your names in cuneiform on the same PDF file.

Day #5 45 mins- Hammurabi's Code in the Real World
Today, you are going to be exploring the oldest piece of archeological evidence from Mesopotamia. You are gong to be reading through a translation of the actual set of laws as they were written nearly 5,000 years ago! There are a total of 282 laws that were written. With your partner, skim through the list...You won't be able to read all of them...Try to get through as many as you can!
Now, focus on THREE laws that really stand out to you and your partner. You are going to fill in the page entitled Comparing Hammurabi to Today. Within this chart, you will write down the THREE laws that you found particularly interesting and then comment as to how they are similar and different to laws that we have today.
