The 2009 Economic and Product Market Databook for Makati, Philippines
The 2009 Economic and Product Market Databook for Makati, Philippines
In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have occasionally been asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services in Philippines. The purpose of this study is to understand the density of demand within Philippines and the extent to which Makati might be used as a point of distribution within Asia. From an economic perspective, however, Makati does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries, rather, it represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for Makati over the next five years for hundreds of industries, categories and products. The goal of this report is to report the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by Makati when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in Makati used by the space industry to launch satellites. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by the area served by Makati. Without Makati, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the population in Philippines, Asia, or the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both Asia and Makati.

Model: April Sevilla Makeup and Hairstyle: Paul Refol Location: Indios-Bravos Multimedia Straight from a shoot in Muntinlupa, Eric and I proceeded to Indios-Bravos for another concept shoot. This is maybe the 3rd time I had a collaboration shoot with April. The first was at an event (there might be several), 2nd was at the See Breeze Resort in Taguig City. This time we put her to test with newcomer make up artist Paul Refol. Paul really made her look stunning with a wild hair like this. Suits her personality. His attention to detail was meticulous and his taste in styling, like a 5-star hotel chef. It is no wonder he went on to make a name for himself such that when I contacted him later, I can't afford his fee anymore! April herself went on to become model of a high-end makeup and hair styling shop. Driving around the vicinity of Makati Medical Center, the shops surrounding the hospital displays a big ad poster featuring her.

Makati, specifically. There is a lot of new construction underway, as is the case in most SE Asian capitol cities...especially Bangkok, where we have 25 new 5-star hotels under construction. It's nice to see that most of the new construction here in Manila is actually quite tasteful, unlike most of the existing unpainted (and as a result - moldy), and crumbling structures. This is my first-ever in-camera panorana with the Sony NEX-5. The camera did a pretty good job stitching this 180 degree view. If you view the image in Flickr as "original size", you will see the detail...

Makati: Webster's Timeline History, 1835 - 2007
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Makati," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Makati in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Makati when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Makati, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain.
