The Gap Resthouse - Fraser's Hill - 1915*
The Gap Resthouse - Fraser's Hill - 1915*
The Gap, Fraser's Hill. Located 103km north of Kuala Lumpur and straddling the Pahang/Selangor border, Fraser's Hill is another Malayan hill station created by the British. Scattered over seven hills from an altitude of 1,220 to 1,535m, the settlement itself remains a peaceful escape from KL. It was named after Scotsman and tin prospector, Louis James Fraser, who earned a fortune tin mining in the area in 1890 and who also provided a mule transport service between Kuala Kubu Bahru and Raub. To lift the spirits of his Chinese tin miners, Fraser operated an opium and gambling den at the camp. This shrewd ploy ensured that miners' wages would find their way back into Fraser's ledgers. In about 1915, Fraser mysteriously disappeared without a trace. A search party was sent out to look for him by the Bishop of Singapore, CJ Ferguson-Davie. Fraser, however, was never found but his searchers found his camp and discovered that it presented the perfect place for a hill station. In 1917, the British administrators developed a hill resort in the style of Tudorbethan bungalows and stone "cottages" reminiscent of a Scottish hamlet. It became a popular getaway for government officials and others to escape the heat and humidity of the lowlands. This charming Resthouse with decorative quoining is just 6km from the summit at 800m above sea level. Access from here to Fraser's Hill is via a very narrow one-way road where the direction of traffic is changed every hour or so. It served as a resting place for travellers before the final push to the settlement itself. Accommodation was available as were English teas. It was a place for the old car to cool down and for the motion-sickness passenger to shake off the green cobwebs after the twisting drive up. The Gap Resthouse itself was mentioned in Henri Fauconnier's 1930 novel 'The Soul of Malaya' in which he describes the very British characters arriving at the Gap one evening for a splendid dinner:- "A resplendent table had been prepared; all the government crockery and silver with the bull's head crest, the whole stock of bottles arrayed like skittles on the sideboard...cocks, ducks, a suckling pig were laid before us." Alas, after decades of providing shelter and refreshment, today the building stands empty and forlorn. Newly painted but strangely lifeless in the middle of the Malayan jungle...anybody know what plans are in store for the old girl?
