1914 Print Victoria Harbor British Columbia Parliament Building Empress Hotel - Original Halftone Print
This is an original 1914 halftone print of the Victoria Harbor, as well as the Parliament Building and the Empress Hotel.
Named after Queen Victoria, the city of Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, became officially incorporated in 1862, though its roots date back to the 1700s. Upon the discovery of gold in the area in 1858, the city's population boomed, increasing from 300 to more than 5,000 in a matter of days. During the late 19th century, Victoria's port became the largest importers of opium from Hong Kong with distribution into North America until the trade industry became illegal in 1908. Today, Victoria is home to British Columbia Parliament Buildings, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the Craigdarroch Castle, the Helmcken House, Temple Emanuel, St. Ann's Academy, the Empress Hotel, the University of Victoria, the Royal British Columbia Museum, the Emily Carr House, Beacon Hill Park, Royal Roads University, the Belfry Theatre, Camosun College and more.
